The W Edinburgh, the latest addition to Marriott International’s portfolio, offers a dynamic fusion of luxurious modern design and world-class amenities. Known for its minimalist, elegant, and vibrant atmosphere, the W brand emphasizes the importance of sound in shaping guest experiences. As part of its ongoing commitment to innovation, W Edinburgh partnered with Link Media Systems to install a state-of-the-art audio system that would provide an immersive, high-quality audio experience on its stunning 12th floor rooftop terrace and in its unique ground-floor Cinematic Tunnel.

The Challenge

W Edinburgh’s rooftop terrace is a breathtaking open-air space with panoramic views of the city, making it the perfect setting for social gatherings, live events, and sunset cocktails. However, the space presented unique acoustic challenges: 

• The need for high sound pressure levels (SPL) to energize the space. 
• Maintaining discretion with the equipment, keeping the speakers unobtrusive and seamlessly integrated into the terrace’s minimalist design. 
• Containing sound within the rooftop area to avoid disturbing nearby residents. 
• Ensuring the system is weather-resistant to cope with Scotland’s unpredictable climate. 

Similarly, the Cinematic Tunnel, a striking indoor area linking the reception and themed seating space, required a high-impact yet discreet audio solution to complement the large video display without distracting from the sleek design. 

The Solution

Link Media Systems delivered an innovative, custom-designed audio system using high-performance equipment from K-array—a renowned Italian audio manufacturer. The design provided exceptional sound quality across both key areas of the hotel, while preserving the hotel’s aesthetic and ensuring minimal disruption to the surrounding environment. 

Rooftop Terrace Audio System: To meet the demands of the open rooftop space, Link Media installed 43 Vyper-KV52 line arrays, placed evenly around the perimeter of the terrace. The arrays, each half a meter long, were integrated into the custom Rimex copper-colored cladding to match the hotel’s architectural features. This careful placement delivered well-controlled, high-energy sound that filled the space without affecting the neighboring properties. The stainless steel construction of the speakers ensures long-lasting protection against the elements. 

For low-frequency support, 16 Rumble-KU210 dual 10” subwoofers were strategically positioned around the central core of the building. These subwoofers, partially concealed under the terrace’s iconic steel spiral design, provide the deep, resonant bass that complements the lively atmosphere of W events and parties. Powering the entire system are Kommander-KA104 amplifiers, with DSP processing, fed via Dante from a central equipment room. The BSS Soundweb signal processor manages the audio flow, while a Crestron interface enables intuitive control for hotel staff, allowing them to easily manage sound levels and inputs. 

Cinematic Tunnel Audio System: The Cinematic Tunnel features plush seating opposite a massive 32 x 9 double-aspect high-resolution video display. For audio, Link Media installed Vyper-KV52 line arrays at either end of the screen, blending them seamlessly with the tunnel’s architecture. Additional Vyper-KV52 arrays were discreetly concealed above seating areas, while Rumble-KU44 subwoofers were placed under the seating to provide immersive low-end support, ensuring the tunnel’s sound matches its visual impact.

The rooftop system performed flawlessly during W Edinburgh’s premier opening party, where over 200 guests enjoyed live entertainment with pristine sound. The audio system created a high-energy, party atmosphere without disturbing the surrounding neighborhood. As W Edinburgh’s IT Manager, Kevin Edwards, noted: “The sound was incredible. The coverage is really well focused and delivers plenty of energy without spilling out into the surroundings. We’ve had the volume pretty high, and the K-array speakers handle it with ease—crystal clear sound quality.” Similarly, the Cinematic Tunnel’s audio system enhances the space’s modern appeal, delivering a cohesive, immersive audiovisual experience that elevates the hotel’s luxury feel.

The collaboration between Link Media Systems and K-array created a perfect blend of design and cutting-edge technology, transforming these spaces into audio experiences that complement the hotel’s contemporary luxury.
